‘He’s special, but he wasn’t playing,’ says Cristiano Ronaldo’s former Portugal captain, in response to his Manchester United rejection

Cristiano Ronaldo’s second stint at Manchester United ended rather abruptly with the club announcing that the legendary Portugal forward has left by “mutual agreement”.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s tumultuous exit from Manchester United continues to rumble in the background of the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup.

United announced on Tuesday that the Portugal legend had left the club by “mutual agreement” as a result of the fallout from his explosive interview in which he slammed the club’s hierarchy, aside from manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo is currently captaining the Portuguese team in the World Cup, and his former national team captain Luis Figo has stated that his decision to leave the club is beneficial to both parties.

“After all of the events that occurred, I believe it was a joint decision.” I believe that a mutual agreement is beneficial to both parties.

“For himself because he wasn’t playing, and for the club, because the player doesn’t want to stay,” Figo said on Sports 18.

“He’s of course a special player, an important player but at the same time, he was not playing, not being an option for the coach. After the interview – he was complaining about the club and the club decided with a mutual agreement to separate the destiny of both. Well, it’s like that – mutual agreement. Everyone’s happy,” said Figo.

It’s unclear where Ronaldo will go from here. Figo stated that their 37-year future will be determined by his career goals.

“Well, I’m not sure. I believe it is always a personal decision, depending on his goals and the current offers. “However, this is a personal and sporting decision for him, depending on which clubs want him,” he said.

Manchester United announced Ronaldo’s departure in a terse statement, putting an end to the dramatic chain of events that began with his explosive television interview.

Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed to leave Manchester United with immediate effect. The club wishes him and his family well for the future and thanks him for his enormous contribution during two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances.

“Everyone at Manchester United is focused on continuing the team’s progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to achieve success on the field,” the club said.
