The day of 25 April is critical in the history of Doordarshan. It was the day in 1982 when the channel first started testing colour broadcasts. Doordarshan has remembered the day with its official Twitter handle. Releasing a video from the channel, it had written, “This day of ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ that year. On 25 April 1982, Doordarshan started the test run of India’s first colour telecast.”

Brief History of Doordarshan

Doordarshan (named 1975) founded on 15 September 1959 as an examination. At that time, half-an-hour was broadcast three days a week and was known as Television India. Its daily broadcast began as a part of All India Radio in 1965, and a 5-minute news bulletin was launched, which Pratima Puri read. In 1967, Salma Sultan joined Doordarshan and became the new anchor.

From 1972 to 1975, Doordarshan had access to only seven cities in the country. On 1 April 1976, the TV service split from the radio. In New Delhi, different directors-general started managing All India Radio and Doordarshan. Doordarshan became a National Broadcaster in 1982. In 1982, National Telecast, i.e. DD National, had introduced. On 15 August 1982, colour television had launched with a live telecast of the speech of the then PM Indira Gandhi. In 2014, Doordarshan director-general Vijayalakshmi Chhabra gave it the new slogan ‘Desh Ka Apna Channel’.

Doordarshan offers three-tier services

Doordarshan has three-tier program services – national, regional and local. National events emphasize events and issues of interest for the whole country. These programs include news, current affairs, magazine programs and documentaries on science, art, culture, environment, social issues, serials, music, dance, drama and feature films.
