The COVID-19 vaccination campaign has started in Sri Lanka on Friday. A day earlier, India has given 5 lakh doses of the Covishield vaccine as a gift to the island nation.
The operation began at the Army Hospital in Narhenpita. The ‘Made in India’ Covshield vaccine was first introduced to frontline workers fighting COVID-19. The National Infectious Diseases Vaccination Campaign has formally launched with the participation of the state’s primary health services, epidemic and COVID prevention, Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopule and India’s High Commissioner Gopal Chandel.
The first vaccine given to the hospital specialist Dr. Anand Wijewikrema. Other hospital staff then vaccinated. The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka tweeted, ‘Made in India vaccine given in various hospitals in Colombo. The campaign formally launched at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases. Honorable Minister of State, Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopul, High Commissioner and various other dignitaries attended the event.

Last week, the Drug Regulatory Body of Sri Lanka – the National Medicine Regulatory Authority (NMRA) approved the vaccine of Oxford AstraZeneca. The Oxford AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine developed in the UK is manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII). India has provided the Kovishield vaccines to Sri Lanka under the ‘Neighborhood First Policy’. The vaccine consignment contained 42 boxes. A total of 5 lakh doses of vaccines sent to Sri Lanka.
