There is a mythological belief behind celebrating Onam. It is say that there was an Asura king name Mahabali in Kerala. Onam festival is celebrate in his honor. The people in his kingdom were very happy and prosperous. During this, Lord Vishnu brought Vamana avatar and saved him by taking his entire kingdom in three steps. It is believe that they come once a year to see their subjects. Since then, the festival of Onam is celebrate every year in Kerala to welcome King Bali.
