The ‘Tiranga Rally’ organized by the Joint Muslim Action Committee on Friday vowed not to show any document to establish proof of domicile of the citizens of India. Decades later, the Old City witnessed a massive rally over three kilometers, waving the Indian national flag, young and old walking from Ediga Miralam to Shastriapuram. The crowd did not spread until 4 pm and conveyed that CAA, NRC, and NPR are unacceptable.
Shops and other business establishments dropped their shutters in support of the rally. Many educational institutions announced a half-day holiday for the convenience of staff and students. Merchant organizations, professional groups, social and human rights organizations also participated.
The rally began after the prayer of prayers at Eidgah Mir Alam and concluded in Shastriapuram, where AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi lives. Usually, Eid prayers performed in Edgar only (twice a year). Maulana Rizwan Qureshi, the Imam, and Khatib of the historic Mecca Masjid delivered a Zuma discourse in Arabic and led the prayer. Under the leadership of Mr. Owaisi, the rally started at 1:50 pm after worship.
Young people were shouting slogans like “Hindustan Zindabad,” and we’re saying that. Let us reject CAA-NRC. Many marchers carried Tiranga and placards with catchy phrases.
Protesters shouted slogans against Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. Women’s groups participated as various women’s self-help groups.
The city police had made elaborate arrangements and diverted the traffic route for the rally.
Speakers addressing the rally urged people not to cooperate with supporters seeking information about the National Population Register or any other such government process. He condemned the central government’s intention to convert India into a Hindu nation. He pledged to strengthen the secular fabric of the country.
Many speakers said that the movement would not end until the government repealed the amendments made to the Citizenship Act. He also demanded that the state government should pass a resolution in the Legislative Assembly as the Kerala Legislative Assembly announced not to conduct NPR and NCR exercises in Telangana.
Addressing the protesters, Mr. Owaisi said that the movement would not end with this rally. The people of Telangana, who cut political and religious affiliations, have gathered here to deliver a message to the Prime Minister of India that we reject the amendments made in the Citizenship Act. People want the country to be secular and Drs. Preserve the constitution prepared under the leadership of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
He reiterated his demand that the Central Government withdraw the Citizenship Amendment Act and stop the practice on the National Citizens’ Register and leave the National Population Register forever. He said that people should not show their Aadhaar card or any documents to the government or police officials, which is part of the practice. If someone comes to you asking for documents, show them the national flag as proof of nationality, Mr. Owaisi said. He said that a large number of women were present, and if Modiji wants to see women empowerment, they should see their presence here.
Mr. Owaisi said that a protest meeting would be held at Charminar on January 25, when Mushaira held. The national flag will be hoisted at 12.01 pm on January 26. A human chain will be formed from Mohammadi Lines to Bapu Ghat on the day of Gandhi’s assassination on January 30.
