Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli has announced that he will step down as captain in the T20 format after the upcoming 2021 T20 World Cup. He made this announcement through a post on social media. In the shared post, Virat Kohli said that he said that he has taken this decision very carefully considering the workload. However, he made it clear that he would continue to lead India in Test and ODI cricket. Kohli said that he has conveyed his decision to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah.
Virat Kohli said, “I have taken the decision to step down from captaincy in the T20 format following the advice of people close to me,” head coach coach Ravi Shastri and Rohit Sharma. I have given a lot to the team during my captaincy. Considering the workload, I have decided to step down as India captain in the T20 format after the 2021 T20 World Cup. But I will continue to support the team as a batsman.”
He said, ‘For the last 8-9 years, I have been representing the country in all three formats. For the last 5-6 years, I am the captain of all three. I think I need to leave some space to be ready for captaincy in Test and ODI formats. As a T20 captain, I have given my all and I will be associated with the T20 team as a batsman.
Kohli has decided to step down from the captaincy in the T20 format to focus on Tests and ODIs. He has made it clear that he will continue to captain India in ODIs and Tests. He also suggested making Rohit the captain in the T20 format.
