Virat Kohli scored back-to-back centuries in ODI cricket when he brought up his 45th ODI ton against Sri Lanka in the first three-match ODI series on Tuesday.
It was also his 73rd hundred in international cricket.
With this century, Kohli equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 20 ODI tonnes at home, which he set in 2007. Tendulkar reached the milestone in 164 matches, while Kohli did so in 101.
Virat Kohli also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI centuries against Sri Lanka. Tendulkar has eight to his name, while Kohli has nine.
Earlier in the tour, Kohli ended his ODI century drought against Bangladesh. For 1214 days, the number three batter went without a century. When he last scored an ODI century, the former India captain had left batting legend Ricky Ponting behind.
Kohli is only five ODI centuries away from breaking Tendulkar’s ODI record for most hundreds. Kohli has 45 ODI centuries, while Tendulkar has 49 ODI hundreds.
He is likely to break more ODI records as India has a busy ODI schedule — 15 matches excluding the Asia Cup — in the 10 month period leading up to the World Cup in October-November.
Kohli has the opportunity to break another record, as he only needs 180 more runs to enter the top five all-time ODI run scorers. In the elite list, Kohli is only behind Tendulkar, Sangakkara, Ponting, Jayasuriya, and Jayawardene.
